The Big Tour (Part 4: Potato, Lettuce, Cabbage)

On the left is Lettuce (sla in Dutch) and on the right is Cauliflower (bloemkool in Dutch). We've already eaten two heads of lettuce. This third one is growing a lot slower than the other two did, probably because we kept it inside on a windowsill for much longer (we wanted to see which would grow better, indoors or outdoors. Now we know). We only have one cauliflower, and the flower part is finally starting to poke out through the leaves (not visible in the photo).
Potato: (aardappel in Dutch) So, how come no one ever mentioned how easy it is to grow potatoes? Above is a picture of our potato plant. All we did was cut two potatoes in half, throw them in a hole, and a month later we had this. Amazing.  We got the idea here. The photo is a little deceiving, the plant is about two feet tall.
And here is our broccoli (broccoli in Dutch). I think it's a really beautiful plant. We had three, but this is the only one that's thriving and we're not sure why (there is no picture of the others because they're sad). This is a plant that needs a lot of space and time, and will yield only one head of broccoli. I have a whole new respect for broccoli and it's farmers now. I saw someone growing broccoli on their front lawn in Brooklyn once, and I think I understand why now. It will slowly bloom for most of the summer. It spreads out into a really big, cool-looking symmetrical plant-- a few will cover a large area like a lawn. And at the end of it all, you have delicious food!
