So, this is the rest of our yard. On the left, next to Matt, is our compost pile. On the right, our grill. Both deserve explanations.
We're trying to be as minimal as possible. We don't want to buy things that aren't necessary. So, this grill started with Matt digging up a big hole in the ground. Then he lined it with concrete blocks. The actual grill part is suspended on a tripod. It spins freely and can be raised and lowered. It's great.
This is our compost. Basically, we just dug a hole. We put all of our food scraps in there... you know, onion peels, apple pits, coffee grounds, stuff like that. We leave it covered with a tarp. After a few months of rotting, we have fresh soil for our garden.
The ashes from grilling are excellent for composting. The ashes are alkali, which helps break down the stuff in the compost. And they also have lots of potassium and other minerals. Composting is a great way to reduce the amount of garbage you produce and it reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
In The Netherlands, at least where we live, the soil is very sandy so making our own fertile soil has been extremely helpful.
